Amherst College rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh, sending UW-Platteville to a heart-breaking 12-11 softball loss late Sunday night in Tucson, Ariz.

Central College shut down the young Pioneers in the first game, winning 9-0.

Coach Heather Townsend's team, which features 15 first-year players, used a seven-run fourth inning to take an 11-3 lead. Freshman Jordan Johnson smashed a three-run home run, her first collegiate HR.

Amherst scored one in the bottom of the fourth, four more in the fifth and then the bir four-run seventh. Annemarie Iker doubled home the winning run with one out in the seventh.

The Pioneers knocked out 14 hits, including three by Megan Nelson, and two each by Johnson, Tera Burr, Brittany Carlson and Chantel McReynolds.

In the opener, three Central pitchers combined on a one-hitter. Burr began the game with a single, but that was UWP's only hit. With her three hits on the day, Burr moved within three of tying Lynn Nagy's career school record of 163.

The 1-3 Pioneers are back in action Monday, facing Denison and Schreiner. They conclude their trip with two more games Tuesday.
